Our Curriculum
The Copplestone Curriculum has been developed over several years to ensure that children receive a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum which prepares them for the next stage of their education.
Our learning values are at the core of each subject and through them, we strive to ensure the children become confident, curious learners who enjoy a challenge.
Through our carefully planned curriculum offer, the children will:
-
Develop in their social and moral purpose, as they build their sense of uniqueness and self-worth as an individual and as a member of our school community.
-
Develop their understanding of their local and national heritage and their role in modern Britain today.
-
Develop their understanding of the world and how to be caring citizens.
-
Be offered opportunities to nurture their individual creative talents and to achieve their true and full potential.
-
Appreciate the beauty and excitement of learning and experiencing things for the first time.
We give high priority to teaching the fundamentals of reading, writing and maths every day to ensure that all pupils acquire the basic skills for learning and life, and these skills are used and practiced across other subjects.
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds is used for the teaching and learning of phonics and early reading in Early Years and Key Stage 1. All staff are trained in this and receive regular support and coaching.
In mathematics we take a mastery approach to teaching, where children are encouraged to:
-
Have a deep understanding of numbers and the number system.
-
Develop the fluency to approach calculations with accuracy.
-
Ask questions and make conjectures.
-
Develop strong problem-solving skills.
-
Talk about their maths and give explanations.
Our wider curriculum is based on the Grammarsaurus model where the precise knowledge and skills we wish children to acquire are clearly identified, sequentially organised and developed using prior knowledge built over time. Teachers are able to enrich the curriculum in different ways to bring the learning to life. Using a range of methods for assessment and feedback ensures that any gaps in knowledge are quickly identified, and teachers can address these effectively to ensure that all children make progress.
